Trade tensions and energy costs dominated the headlines on Thursday, as China and the EU met in Beijing for difficult talks, freight costs stayed near record highs, and global markets reacted to new signals from the US Federal Reserve.

China rejects EU request to limit hybrid car exports

China rejected the European Union’s request for voluntary limits on hybrid car exports, just ahead of the second round of trade talks held in Beijing on October 8. The EU is now considering a unilateral measure to cap hybrid imports from China. The talks between Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and Commerce Minister Wang Wentao are expected to be difficult, with experts predicting no major breakthrough. The dispute adds to rising tariff and duty risk on Chinese goods across Europe, following new UK anti-dumping measures and a French-German push for a stronger EU trade defense tool. No new China-US tariff moves were reported; the existing trade truce runs to January 10.

Freight costs hit records as Hormuz attacks continue

Shipping and freight costs are at record levels as attacks in the Strait of Hormuz continue. Nine attacks were recorded in the first week of October, already half of September’s total. Weekly crude flows through the strait are 23 percent below baseline at 10.3 million barrels per day, and US oil inventories fell by 3.2 million barrels. Tanker captains are reportedly being offered bonuses of more than $100,000 to sail through the strait. Brent crude traded around $101.10 a barrel and WTI around $89.23. The US Energy Information Administration raised its fourth-quarter Brent forecast by $14 to $105, and a hurricane is forecast to strike the US Gulf Coast within three days.

Market snapshot

Bitcoin held near $83,300, just above the key $83,000 support level, with Ethereum around $2,600. The 10-year US Treasury yield spiked to 5.36 percent intraday on Wednesday, its highest since January 2002, before settling near 5.27 percent. US stocks trimmed losses after the release of the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes, which signaled another rate hike is likely by year end but no urgency for October. The Dow fell 0.7 percent to 51,179, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq each slipped 0.2 percent. Gold held near $4,080 and the dollar index near 102.3. Next catalysts: the outcome of the China-EU talks, October 14 US inflation data, and the October 28 Fed meeting.
