Bitcoin’s Soft-Inflation Pop to $85,500 Fades as Treasury Yields Refuse to Fall
Bitcoin showed exactly how tightly its fortunes are tied to the bond market on October 1, rallying on good inflation news and then surrendering the gains as Treasury yields refused to budge. The largest cryptocurrency rose 0.4% to just above $83,700 by Thursday morning in Asia, after a softer-than-expected U.S. inflation report had pushed it as high as $85,500 on Wednesday.
The catalyst was the August personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index — the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge — released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis on September 30. The index rose 3.4% from a year earlier, and 3.0% excluding food and energy, both below the 3.7% and 3.3% forecasts compiled by Dow Jones. “Crypto markets took that as a relief signal, and bitcoin jumped back above $85,000 as bond yields slipped and investors became more willing to buy risk assets again,” Dan Khus, chief analyst at LVRG Research, told CoinDesk.
But the relief was short-lived. The 10-year Treasury yield traded around 5.28%, close to its highest level since 2002, while the 30-year steadied at 5.62%. Lower odds of a Fed hike did not translate into lower borrowing costs — and without that, Bitcoin could not hold $85,000. Market odds of an October rate increase dropped from above 70% to around 37%, with December now looking like the more likely timing for the next move, according to Khus.
Elsewhere in the market, Ether added less than 1% to around $2,690, XRP was flat at $1.50, Solana slipped nearly 1% to just under $119, and HYPE led the majors with a 3% gain to about $89. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index stood at 71–74, in “Greed” territory, and Bitcoin finished September up roughly 7%.
Why it matters: Even favorable inflation data cannot lift crypto while long-term yields sit at 24-year highs — a sustained drop in the 10-year yield, not Fed speculation, is what would give the next rally room to hold.
